How many days until Black Friday?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday shopping season. The countdown tells you how long you have to write your wish list.
How long does Black Friday last?
Black Friday itself is just one day: Friday, November 27, 2026. In practice, though, the deals last longer:
- Black Friday: Friday, November 27, the official day, usually the one with the deepest discounts.
- Black Friday week: Monday, November 23 to Monday, November 30, as many stores run their deals all week long.
- Cyber Monday: Monday, November 30, for most stores, the last day of deals.
When do the deals end? Most end at midnight on Cyber Monday. Some stores start as early as the beginning of November, and others extend a few deals for a couple of days. Each store sets its own dates and usually announces them a few days ahead: if you are watching a product, check the end date shown on the deal page.
Thanksgiving weekend 2026
- Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26.
- Black Friday: Friday, November 27.
- Small Business Saturday: Saturday, November 28: started by American Express in 2010 to support local shops.
- Cyber Monday: Monday, November 30.
- Giving Tuesday: Tuesday, December 1: a day for donating to charities, started in 2012.
Is Black Friday a holiday?
Not a federal one: post offices and banks are open as usual. Many state governments, school districts and employers give the day off, though, which turns Thanksgiving into a four-day weekend for millions of people. Check your company or state calendar before planning on it.
Why is it called Black Friday?
The name comes from Philadelphia in the 1950s and 60s, where police used it for the day after Thanksgiving, when shoppers and tourists flooded the city and traffic was a nightmare. A friendlier explanation came later: the day when stores go from being in the red to being "in the black", or turning a profit.
Shop smart
- Check the price history. Some "deals" are prices raised in October and lowered in November. Note the prices of what you want now, or use a price tracker, so you know a real discount when you see one.
- Read the return policy. Many big retailers extend their return windows for holiday purchases into January, but rules vary from store to store and for items sold by third-party sellers.
- Watch out for scams. Fake stores and deal texts spike this time of year. Type the store address yourself instead of tapping links, and pay with a credit card: it makes it easier to dispute a charge for something that never arrives.
